Yin Yang and the Changing Seasons

Smooth Sailing into Autumn

Summer is coming to an end and it is time to prepare for the cooler days of Autumn and the longer nights of Winter. As we are well aware, Summer is the hottest time of the year, with the most sunlight and, therefore, the most Yang energy. Yang is the active part of our lives. It is warming by nature and expansive, supporting the active and joyous times of Summer.

Autumn begins the transition to the coldest time of the year. The nights become longer and the temperatures cooler. By nature, Yin is the more passive, still and conservative part of our lives. When we slow down, the body begins to store energies, preparing for the cold and dark Winter.

5 ways to feel great NOW!

1. Adjust your diet as the season changes. When the temperatures are warm, eat foods that are cooling. In contrast, when the temperatures are cold, eat foods that warm the body.

2. Be mindful of how your exercise routine changes with the change of season. In the summer, after a workout, it feels great to cool off by jumping in the water. You would never dream of doing that in the winter. During the cooler months, practice activities that help build your energy reserves like Qi Gong, Yoga & Meditation.

3. Schedule something just for you! Whether it’s time outside enjoying nature, a regular exercise routine or taking a class you find interesting, make sure you dedicate time each week simply for yourself.

4. Sleep more. Now that’s advice everyone loves to hear! Plan to sleep a few extra winks during the Autumn and Winter months. Many animals hibernate through the difficult cold winter. Unfortunately that is not an option for us humans but try to give yourself some extra sleep time by getting to bed before 11:00 PM each night. This will enhance the quality of your night’s rest.

5. Plan a vacation to a warm climate during the long cold winter months. By planning your Winter getaway early, you will not only save money, you will also be treating yourself to a slice of Yang at the most Yin time of the year.

Live the life you want with more energy . . . start NOW!
